It is with great regret to announce the death of one of our long-time rowers, Charlie Adams senior. Charlie had recently retired in March of 2012 and had just moved to their new home in Tomaston Maine.

According to young Charlie, they had been there about two weeks, Charlie had a cold/flu like symptoms, went to the doctors, and was advised he had a cold. On Saturday, he started having shortness of breath. 911 was called, and upon their arrival, Charlie became unresponsive and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Charlie leaves his wife Donna and his son Charlie and his wife from Kingston, MA.  A memorial service will be held at the Trinity Church in Rockland. Donations can go to an outward bound program that will be listed in his obituary, which will be published in the Patriot Ledger some time this week.

For those of you that don't know (young Charlie) his son, he was part of our youth rowing program for many years and sailed on the HMS Bounty for several years as well.  Charlie also played a roll in Pirates of the Caribbean I & II while sailing on the bounty. The HMS Bounty sank this past fall in a hurricane off the Carolina coastline.

Our condolences go out to Charlie's family and those that wish to are encouraged to attend his service or make a donation in Charlie's name.

Submitted at the request of the family.

Those of us that have rowed for a long time will remember when the Bounty came into port in Plymouth several years ago. They wanted to learn about Gig rowing, so we took them out and they gave us a tour of their ship and how they lived!!!! and slept in hammocks.  Our own youth rower, Charlie Adams, sailed on the Bounty for a few years for the experience.  If I am correct he got $50.00 A WEEK for the experience.  Disney took the Bounty and refurbished it for Pirates 1 and 2 for which Charlie Adams was actually in the movie and I was fortunate enough to get pictures from Charlie along with Johnny Depp.  Tragically, the Bounty sank off the coast of the Carolinas during the recent storm.  14 crew members were rescued, 1 body recovered, and the captain is still missing.  For those of us that were fortunate enough to tour this amazing ship, may she rest in peace. -Jan

There sure is something about the Snow Row that sets it aside from all other rowing events.  Is it because it is the first race of the season?  Or perhaps the Le Mans start, or the history of the event?  Whatever it is, I am sure you all agree, it is an exciting race. This year was no different; not counting whale boats, there were about 30 gigs on the beach.  More than I have ever seen in one place before.  The day started with a snow flurry that somehow was appropriate and set the stage nicely.

It was particularly nice to see the hero of the 2011 Snow Row, Jan Reddy, in attendance (I knew you would find a way not to miss it).

Both the men in the Interceptor and the women racing in the Jenness came in second behind Belfast. A respectable finish given Belfast's boats are more than 300 pounds lighter than ours. Not to mention that the girls boat was cut off at the start where collisions and broken thole pins were what they had to deal with. Congratulations to Belfast; they have, under Malcolm's direction, put a very strong program together and have raised the bar to become great rivals for Saquish.  What a great sport we have all happened on to.

Congratulations to all.

Team Saquish is gearing up for this year's Snow Row on March 10.  Here are some photos of the men's team (Dennis Reddy, Kurt Bittrolff, Peter Smith, Jim Brennan, Sterling Wall, and Rick Anderson; Peter Oberto, Cox).

The past few years, electronic transmissions and the website have been the primary means of passing information to our membership. The Board of Directors has made some changes in policy that are so significant that a personal letter was deemed appropriate.  Read the letter.

The following segment aired on the 6:00 evening news on WBZ CBS on March 23, 2011.  It's a nice piece of coverage of a defining moment in Team Saquish rowing history.  Not enough can be said of the seven women involved.  Their actions reflect tremendous credit upon themselves, Team Saquish, and the overall spirit and tradition of open water rowing.

This year's Snow Row is one that will not soon be forgotten. The entire Saquish fleet was on the water, with each crew having their own story to tell at the end of the day. Congratulations to the men of the Interceptor for bringing back the coveted golden clam shell to Saquish Rowing. The Tucker, crewed by the Mother Tuckers and coxed by Master and Commander Sterling Wall, also was a winner with the best time in its class - well done. The most important story of the day, however, was the crew of the Jenness and their rescue of five rowers who were capsized, found and saved. With Janet Reddy's skill with the rudder, I hear each rower was plucked from the sea one by one, unharmed.  Congratulations!  A proud moment for us all.

We rowed to Clark's Island on Saturday, December 4th, and spent the day exploring and cutting down Christmas trees on Skip Taylor's Tree Farm.  We took the usual stroll to the graveyard and to see the original Plymouth rock.  Thank you Skip!  Please visit www.hilarymoll.com to see photos.

The annual Holiday Party is Saturday, December 11, 6:30 PM, at the Reddy's house (35 Forest Street in Plympton).  Please bring your own drinks and bring a main dish to share.  We will also be doing the Yankee Swap where you bring a unisex gift, costing approximately $10, wrapped, but do not put a name on it. We will then pick numbers and pick gifts, etc. Be creative!

Hope to see you there!
